These eco-friendly Valentine’s Day crafts are quick and easy. The perfect project to do with your little Valentines. They also aren’t going to give your kids a sugar high. And you get to watch the birds enjoy them.
These took me about 20-30 active minutes to make and an additional 3+ hours to dry. I do suggest letting them dry completely before you try to string them up, otherwise they might pull apart.
Heart Shaped Bird Seed Feeders
Yield:
8-9 Hearts
Active Time:
30 minutes
Additional Time:
3 hours
Total Time:
3 hours 30 minutes
Materials
- 2 - 8 gram packets of gelatine
- 2 to 3 cups wild bird seeds
- 20 inch pieces of string
- 'You're Tweet' tags
- 2/3 cup of boiling water
- Straws
- Bakers spray
Tools
- Heart cookie cutters
- Parchment paper
- Large bowl
- Whisk
- Spoon(I used a rice scoop)
- Scissors
Instructions
- Whisk both packs of gelatine in the boiling water for 3 - 5 minutes
- Add in the bird seed, starting with two cups and then adding enough to make the mixture start to hold its shape. Make sure all of the bird seed is covered.
- Spray the inside of the heart cookie cutters with cooking spray.
- Working on parchment paper, stuff the bird seed mixture into the cookie cutters and pack it with the back of your spoon.
- Push a piece of straw in the upper middle of the heart to make a hole, leaving the straw in.
- Let the seed mixture sit in the cutter for a few seconds before removing it.
- Repeat until all of the mixture is gone, I ended up making 9 hearts.
- Let the hearts dry for at least 3 hours. Make sure they are completely dry.
- When they are dry remove the straws and make sure all the holes go all the way through.
- Loop the string through the heart and one of the 'You're Tweet' tags.
- Tie a knot and a bow on the end.
- Done!
